Beyond the Rodeo: A Local’s Guide to Downtown Ellensburg

This guide comes straight from one of our own — Ellensburg local and (in)famous Gård Wine Club Manager, Riley Newman

Every September, Ellensburg fills with rodeo fans from across the Pacific Northwest. The bronc riding and barrel racing are legendary, but there’s so much more to explore once the dust settles. As a transplant who now calls this town home, I’ve come to love the charm, creativity, and community that make Ellensburg special year-round. From relaxed wine tastings to eclectic art galleries, our downtown offers surprising depth beyond the Western festivities. Let me walk you through the best spots for food, drinks, shopping, and culture that will make your visit memorable. Whether you’re here for the rodeo or just passing through, this guide will help you experience the best of our downtown scene.

Breakfast Spots Worth Waking Up For

Fuel up with a solid breakfast – these local favorites will keep you going from parade to last call.

  • The Palace Cafe: This beloved breakfast institution on Main St has been fueling locals and visitors alike since 1892. Fluffy pancakes, crispy hash browns, and strong coffee served with a side of history.
  • Early Bird: Serving classic breakfast staples plus burritos and bowls, this casual atmosphere eatery is great for a pick me up at your own pace.  If you miss it in the morning, come back for
  • Night Owl same spot, now serving Asian fusion and craft cocktails.
  • Kittitas Cafe: Just outside downtown, this cozy café serves top-notch espresso, house-baked goods, and a Honey Pear Panini that’s worth the detour. Every time you stop in you can be sure you will be met with top quality fare and staff that are always warm and genuine.
Sip + Savor: Wine, Beer, and Everything in Between

Ellensburg
’s drink scene is full of surprises – whether you’re into bold reds, crisp whites, or local brews.

  • Gård Estate Wines:  Yes, I’m biased — my top pick is Gård on Pearl Street. It’s a relaxed, refined spot to explore some of Washington’s best 100% estate wines. Our 2021 Cabernet Franc is absolutely stunning – it’s a wine club favorite and my personal favorite. We also pour a refreshing Franc Blanc — a white wine made from Cabernet Franc — plus our newly released Vermentino. Only a handful of WA wineries make either of these, and we’re proud to be one of them. No matter your taste, you’ll find a favorite among our 40+ wines, all crafted by our winemaker and viticulturist Matías Kúsulas. And just as memorable as the wines themselves is the experience. Our team is knowledgeable, passionate about WA wines, eager to learn about you, and to share our favorite pours or pairing recommendations.
  • Valo Cellars: If you want to keep the wine tasting going, head a few doors down to Valo Cellars. Sleek space, bold reds, and a white Pinot Noir you won’t forget!  Winemaker Matías Kúsulas also crafts the wines here, and Valo showcases his award-winning Massalto line.
  • Iron Horse Brewery:  Laid-back, locally loved spot downtown known for its creative craft beers and casual vibe. Located just off Main Street on Prospect, it’s the perfect place to unwind with friends. Grab a pint of Irish Death and kick back on their patio. Chill vibes, rotating taps, and a local cult following.

Shop + Stroll: Downtown Gems

Ellensburg
’s walkable downtown is packed with personality. Here are a few spots we always recommend:

  • Claim Clothing: A women’s boutique right next door to us with a beautifully curated mix of stylish, ontrend pieces — the kind you want to wear out the door. Treat yourself (or the stylish someone in your life) to something fresh and fun. And if you’re feeling a little FOMO between visits to Ellensburg, you can browse their latest finds anytime on their website.
  • Gallery One: This cooperative gallery on Pearl Street features rotating exhibits from regional artists. You’ll find everything from traditional art to contemporary pieces that reflect the changing face of the Pacific Northwest. The quality is consistently impressive, and you might just find the perfect piece to commemorate your visit. If Western art is more your style, the neighboring Clymer gallery is a must as well!
  • Evolve Clothing & Jewelry: A charming boutique located right in the heart of Ellensburg’s downtown. This is a must for anyone looking for a unique and meaningful gift. Owner, Hildi Youngblood, places a focus on personally sourcing items from sustainable small businesses around the globe focusing on ethical fair trade and supporting female artisans.
  • Pearl St. Books: Cozy indie bookstore with regional reads, staff picks, and an adorable resident cat. Enough said.
Local Tips + Hidden Favorites

Downtown is easy to navigate! Main, Pearl, and 4th form a walkable grid. Parking can get tight on busy weekends, so arrive early or be ready to hoof it a few blocks.

  • The Huntsman Tavern: After whetting your whistle with us, why not stroll down the block and bask in the classic charm of this beautifully appointed downtown tavern. The Huntsman boasts one of the largest whiskey libraries in Eastern Washington — over 700 bourbons, scotches, and whiskeys to explore. Their rotisserie chicken is a personal favorite, and if you’re craving an exceptional steak in Ellensburg, this is the place get it.
  • The Tav: Dive bar vibes, neon signs, and names etched into the brick walls. A CWU favorite with surprisingly solid food.
  • Julep: Southern comfort meets cocktail lounge. Catfish po’boys, seasonal drinks, and a patio pool table.
  • The Red Pickle: Located downtown in a classic filling station on Pine Street. Serving up Guatemalan takes on classics – a meal I can guarantee you won’t forget. The wasabi fries are a literal eye opener!

Ellensburg is equal parts history, heart, and hidden gems — the kind of place that rewards curiosity and conversation. Take time to wander, sip, nosh, and connect with the people who make this town my home. Whether you’re visiting for a day or a long weekend, we’re glad you’re here!
