Gløgg - A Scandinavian Mulled Wine Winter Drink

Updated: Nov 23, 2020

Warm up during the winter months with a cup of this hot spiced wine served in Scandinavian countries as a Christmas drink, featuring our red blend “The Don”. Serves 5-6

1 bottle Gård “The Don”

1 tsp whole clove

1 tsp whole allspice

1-2 cinnamon sticks

Dash cinnamon

4 tbsp raisins

¾ cup brown sugar

2 pods star anise

¼ tsp ground ginger

¼ tsp cardamom

½ orange (sliced in wheels)

½ apple (thin sliced segments)

½ cup Aquavit*

  1. Slowly heat all ingredients except aquavit on low heat to just below simmer for 30 min.

  2. To serve, add raisins and any other tasty items you'd like from the gløgg mix to a mug. Add 5 to 6 oz of gløgg.

  3. Float with 1 oz aquavit. Serve with small spoon to scoop out the raisins. Skål!

Recipe provided by our friends at Skål Ballard. *Akvavit or aquavit (also akevitt in Norwegian) is a distilled spirit that is principally produced in Scandinavia, where it has been produced since the 15th century. Aquavit is distilled from grain and potatoes, and is flavored with a variety of herbs. Locally, aquavit can usually be found at BevMo and TotalWine, but you may want to call ahead. Or just leave it out and go with what you've got!
